About the programme

Theology at our Faculty of Theology is grounded primarily in the Catholic tradition, yet it is ecumenically open. The program welcomes a wide range of Christians, regardless of denomination, as well as anyone genuinely interested in exploring what Christians truly believe - and, equally, what they do not.
The program is designed for students of all ages: secondary school graduates (mainly in the full-time track) as well as those seeking to enhance their professional qualifications or deepen their personal life through the study of theology (in the part-time track). Our aim is to provide a theology that is both academically rigorous - standing on solid scholarly foundations - and closely connected to the practical life of faith. We want our graduates to be able to say with confidence, ?I know whom I have believed? (2 Tim 1:12) and, at the same time, to be ready ?to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have? (1 Peter 3:15).

Programme structure

What Will You Study?
  • Systematic Theology: You will learn to seek answers to fundamental questions such as: Who is Jesus Christ? (Christology), What does faith in the Holy Trinity mean? (Trinitarian theology), Who is the human being? (Theological anthropology), What is the Church and what is its purpose? (Ecclesiology), and many others.
  • You will be taught by our excellent and always-smiling systematic theologians Lucie Kolářová and Veronika Řeháková.
  • Biblical Studies: You will gain an understanding of what is contained in the Old and New Testaments, how to read them, and how to interpret their meaning.
  • Your teachers Viktor Ber, Július Pavelčík, and Adam Mackerle - they approach Scripture from different perspectives, but together they offer a well-rounded and insightful view.
  • Ethics: What is good and what is evil? Why do we act the way we do, and how should we act? These and similar questions are explored from a variety of perspectives, just to make sure it is not too simple.
  • You will be taught primarily by philosopher Tomáš Machula and theologian Jindřich Šrajer.

  • Church History: Have you ever wondered how Christians lived and experienced their faith throughout the centuries? Here you?ll find your first answers.
  • Martin Weis will introduce you to the history of the Church in our lands, while Rudolf Svoboda will guide you through the history of Christianity around the world.
  • Other Areas of Theology: You will also explore Liturgical Studies (what actually happens during the liturgy?), Pastoral Theology (about living our faith here and now, in today?s world), and Canon Law (how the Church is structured and governed), among others.

  • You?ll be taught by Michaela Vlčková (liturgist), Michal Opatrný (pastoral theologian), Stanislav Přibyl (canon lawyer), and others.

  • You will also take a comprehensive introduction to philosophy, without which theology is hardly conceivable ? and we have many excellent philosophers here!
