Philosophy

The doctoral study of philosophy at the USB Faculty of Theology is four–years long, completed with obtaining the degree Ph.D. The programme is accredited in Czech and English.

The programme orientation derives from the scholarly activity of the staff of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies of FTH USB, which focuses on both the history of philosophy and systematic philosophy. It is above all the scholastic of the High Middle Ages, philosophy of the modern period (second scholastic, Kant), philosophical anthropology, ethics and philosophy of religion.

The study takes place in several seminar groups (basic seminar common to all students of the given programme, specialization seminar for small groups according to the focus of the dissertation thesis and individual seminar consisting of concrete work on the dissertation under the advisorʼs supervision). All activities in the doctoral study are aimed at scholarly work, the goal  of which is the doctoral dissertation.

In conducting the doctoral degree programme, the USB Faculty of Theology cooperates with the USB Faculty of Arts and Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Theology

The doctoral study of theology (Th.D.) focuses on scholarly research and independent creative activity in the field of theology. The applicant selects one of five areas, in which he or she then specializes; these are: systematic theology, theological anthropology and ethics, practical theology, church law and church history.

The study is organized over four years. It takes place under the supervision of an advisor, following an individual study plan. In the course of studies, doctoral students master methods of scholarly work and its professional presentation. The study plan comprises a basic doctoral seminar jointly taken by all students of the first and second year, an individual doctoral seminar consisting of the preparation of a dissertation thesis under the guidance of the advisor, and specialization doctoral seminars, the number and topics of which are stipulated by the academic board for individual doctoral students, e.g. according to their previous studies, their sphere of specialization, dissertation topic and particular needs.

The doctoral degree programme prepares the student for independent scholarly work. He or she will also be capable of pedagogical application of the acquired scholarly knowledge. He or she will master methods of independent scholarly work in the field and will especially be able to follow up on current research in the field and address scholarly issues. He or she will be able to independently publish the results and put them into practice.
