About the programme

You will gain a thorough knowledge of the history of philosophy from antiquity to the present and of the main areas of systematic philosophy ? from logic to ethics. You will acquire the methodology of the discipline together with key academic skills, such as the interpretation of scholarly texts, academic writing, and the ability to conduct informed philosophical discussion.

Programme structure

What Will You Study?
  • History of Philosophy: A four-semester course covering ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary philosophy, complemented by text-reading seminars from each period. You will gain a broad overview of philosophical thought, key themes, major authors, and conceptual developments.
  • Logic: A demanding but rewarding two-semester course that teaches how to think clearly and argue precisely.
  • Philosophical Anthropology: Every human being asks who they are and where they are heading. The ancient Greeks knew why the Delphic oracle bore the inscription ´Know thyself.´ A crucial foundation for the study of thics. Epistemology: It explores fundamental questions about the value and certainty of human knowledge, distinguishing and evaluating different modes of knowing across disciplines.
  • Philosophy of Nature: Natural science does not exhaust everything that can be said about nature. Modern people often speak of the ´value of nature´ or a ´return to nature´ - but what do they actually mean? Metaphysics: A challenging yet fascinating course dealing with reality at its most general and abstract level, clarifying questions about the ultimate foundation of being. Ethics: An inquiry into how to live a good and meaningful life: Is goodness something objective or merely subjective? What attitude should we take toward our lives and actions? Philosophy of Religion: What do we mean when we say ´God´? How do humans understand the possibility of something that transcends them? Other Courses: Seminars on various stimulating topics; an introduction to Latin - the language on which Western culture and civilization were built; disputations (structured academic debates); and training in writing meaningful, well-founded philosophical essays.
    What Makes Our Philosophy Program Unique? Individual Approach: Starting this year, we?re introducing tutorial seminars ? every student will have their own tutor who accompanies them throughout their studies. Who Will Teach You? Daniel Heider (Metaphysics, Renaissance and Early Modern Philosophy) He studied philosophy and English. One of the leading experts on Francisco Suárez and early modern thought, he is great at abstract thinking and metaphysics. Tomáš Machula (Philosophical Anthropology, Ethics, Medieval Philosophy) He originally studied chemistry, later theology and philosophy. A specialist on Thomas Aquinas and the translator of most of his works into Czech. He believes philosophy should truly matter in real life. Lukáš Novák (Medieval Philosophy, Logic) - philosopher and musician, an exceptional expert on John Duns Scotus and an accomplished Latinist. Demanding, but fair - nothing comes without effort. Daniel Novotný (Logic, Epistemology) He studied philosophy in the USA. Known for his broad range of interests and his engaging teaching style. He speaks Chinese and works on ethical issues related to self-driving cars. Jakub Sirovátka (Modern Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Ethics) He studied in Germany. A recognized expert on Kant and late modern philosophy, well-known even in Kant´s homeland. Specialist in continental thought of the 20th century. Jiří Stránský (Ancient Philosophy, Cosmology) He studied philosophy at the Faculty of Science. He knows everything about Plato´s Timaeus - and reads Greek as fluently as Czech. Vojtěch Šimek (Applied Ethics, Contemporary Philosophy) He studied theology and philosophy. An expert on personalism in 20th-century continental philosophy, especially the thought of Hans Jonas and Robert Spaemann. What can you expect during your studies? Guest lectures by Czech and international scholars. Peripatetic brainstorming - our annual departmental trip with teachers and students. Philosophical pub evenings. Philosophy workshop - student-organized discussions on important current topics. Flexible study options: In your first year, you can choose to combine Philosophy (as your major) with a supplementary field (minor).
