TF JU academics at the EABS conference in Syracuse

On days 10-13 July 2023, the annual conference organized by the European Association for Biblical Studies (EABS) took place in the small Italian city of Syracuse. The conference became a gathering of scholars, academics and experts on biblical texts from all over Europe who came together to discuss and present their latest research and analysis. Representatives of the Faculty of Theology of the University of South Bohemia also actively participated in this prestigious event.

Dr. Viktor Ber, who specializes in biblical legal texts, presented a paper on "Laws Against Apostasy (Deuteronomy 13) in the Targum". He dealt with the interpretation and interpretation of the laws against apostasy (Deuteronomy 13) according to the ancient Aramaic versions of the Jewish Bible (the so-called targums). The contribution was about capturing the early Jewish understanding and interpretation of the mentioned text."

Doc. Adam Mackerle, whose research focus is on the Old Testament, presented a paper on "How Jerome Interpreted while Translating: The Case of the False Witness (Deuteronomy 19:15-21) in Vulgate". He focused here on the analysis of the interpretation and translation of the biblical text about false witness (Deuteronomy 19:15-21) in the Latin translation of St. Jerome. In doing so, it contributes to the understanding of how theological and cultural contexts are reflected in biblical translations.

The contributions of both academics were made in the framework of a project supported by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (GAČR) entitled "Deuteronomy of capital crimes and their early recontextualization", whose dr. Viktor Ber is the main researcher. You can find more about the entire project here: TF JU Projects.
