Dr. Viktor Ber and his team succeeded in the GA CR competition

In its largest grant competition, the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (GA ČR) will support over 400 new projects from all areas of research from 2023. Among the successful proposals was the project of dr. Vitkor Ber and his team with named Capital offences in the Deuteronomic Code, and their early linguistic recontextualization.

„The project will research the cases of capital offences in the Deuteronomic Code from the perspective of recent theories and approaches to biblical legal texts. The research will focus on the Hebrew Masoretic text and three ancient versions/traditions: the Greek Septuagint, the Aramaic Targumim and the Latin Vulgate. Relevant texts will first be studied in each of these ancient versions independently, that is, each version as a particular construction of the narrative-legal world, then the results will be compared. The objective is to clarify the re-interpretive strategies used in the selected legal texts of Deuteronomic Code. The specific goal is to find out to what extent the process of recontextualisation continues in the three linguistic variations, by what linguistic means, and how this involves interaction between the specific legal texts and their legal and narrative context. This should significantly expand our knowledge of how biblical legal texts were reflected in religious traditions to which these ancient versions relate, that is, Christianity and Judaism", said Viktor Ber.
