USB help to Ukraine

Helping Ukrainian students and employees of USB

The Rector’s Board of the University of South Bohemia issued a statement on Tuesday already expressing the readiness to provide help to Ukrainian students and employees of the University.

Ukrainian students and employees of the University of South Bohemia who have found or will find themselves in need may turn to the international relations offices of individual faculties and the Rectorate or the student affairs offices of the faculties. Direct help consists in providing extraordinary and social scholarships or by providing or finding accommodation for the families of students and employees who leave Ukraine.

For instance, the management of the Faculty of Science of the University of South Bohemia has already created a postdoctoral position for a colleague from Ukraine who had been cooperating with the faculty. She will be able to travel to the Czech Republic with her family on the basis of that. At the same time, prof. Ing. Hana Šantrůčková, CSc., Dean of the faculty, has decided today on awarding a social scholarship to a Ukrainian student who found herself in financial need due to her assets being frozen in Ukraine.

Equally, the management of the Faculty of Agriculture is talking to a future employee from Ukraine about his move to the Czech Republic with his family on the understanding that the faculty will provide temporary accommodation.

The Faculty of Theology is prepared to admit 2–3 students and immediately provide them with a scholarship in the case of a refugee wave. If needed, the faculty will increase the number of students receiving scholarships.

The USB Faculty of Education has offered its partner primary school in Mukachevo (Ukraine) the option of a stay at a summer camp for children. The faculty has also contacted a group of Ukrainian teachers who regularly come to the USB Faculty of Education for exchange stays and who are currently in Kyiv where they had moved from the Donetsk and Luhansk areas. The faculty has offered help to these teachers as well and it is awaiting their response.

The University Psychological Counselling Centre of USB operating at the USB Faculty of Education is prepared to provide immediate help to Ukrainian students and employees of the University while they are dealing with the hardships.

The Faculty of Arts has decided to award a monthly scholarship to all of its Ukrainian students until the end of this academic year (June 2022).

Equally, the USB Faculty of Economics is prepared to disburse extraordinary scholarships to its students from Ukraine if needed (frozen accounts). At the same time, the faculty is prepared to provide help in the form of facilities for Ukrainian colleagues and their families (4 guest flats, work positions, etc.).

The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters are also contacting their students and offering support and help.

Furthermore, the Director of the USB Dormitories and Refectories issued a decision on 24 February on providing a discount of 50 % on the accommodation for Ukrainian students.

Initiative and help is coming from the students themselves. The Student Union of the University of South Bohemia is planning to open a transparent bank account to help their Ukrainian classmates.
