The Faculty of Theology was founded in 1991 as a part of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice. It builds upon the cultural and educational traditions of the higher theological and philosophical studies in the town which originated in the early nineteenth century.

Theological education in South Bohemia has been connected with the Catholic Diocese of České Budějovice since its beginning in the nineteenth century. Since 1991, the diocesan bishop of České Budějovice has been by statute the moderator of the Faculty of Theology at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, in the Czech Republic.

Faculty graduates are employed both in church organizations aimed at training, educational and cultural activities, as well as in the public sector, especially as social workers in social care and educators at centres for leisure activities.

About the University

The University of South Bohemia was established by an Act of Parliament in 1991, when two unrelated and independent institutions - the College of Education and the Faculty of Agriculture (a branch of the Agricultural University in Prague), merged. The Faculty of Biological Sciences, the Faculty of Health and Social Studies, and the Faculty of Theology were founded in November 1991 following a decision made by the University Academic Senate. The original two faculties are still the largest components of the university while the other three are each approximately one tenth the size of the total student population.

The newly established faculties had a traditional and natural background in the area. The roots of theological education can be traced back to the beginning of the nineteenth century and theology had been taught here until 1950 when it was forcefully stopped by the communist regime. The origins of biological sciences in South Bohemia go back to 1985, when a regional centre of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences was launched here to pursue research stimulated by the local environment. With these educational traditions, the University did not have to begin from scratch and recruited its staff primarily from the Academy of Sciences, local hospitals and religious institutions. According to the 2003 statistics, the University had more than 7000 students, almost 800 staff members, and around 50 buildings around the town.
